About Me | A to Z Challenge

Blogging has been something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. I don’t get a chance to get my thoughts out very often so I thought this would be a great way to say what I’m feeling for any one who cares. So I decided to do a blogging challenge. For the month of April I will blog about a topic from A to Z. I am a mom running a direct sales business so things will revolve around business and kids.

In true TinkeringKate form, here I am at 10:40pm trying to type up my first post for the month. Here we go…

I am a wife, mother of 2 children ages 5 and 2, IP paralegal AND I attempt to run not one, but TWO direct sales businesses. People wonder how I do it all. I’ll let you in on a little secret. I Don’t! There is always something that is NOT getting done. Most things are done last minute as evidenced by my last-stitch effort to post this before midnight. Week days are spent ushering the kids off to school in the morning and trying to guess how late I will be for work. I had everything timed perfectly. I even had my son’s bus stop moved so it was more convenient, then they changed the trolley schedule. So I have decided that I will NEVER get to work on time. My employers seem okay with this. I’ve been there almost 15 years. They know I’m good for it.

The evening is even more fun. It is a whirlwind of trolley troubles, what’s for dinner, who’s going to eat said dinner, homework, bath and bed. Let’s get real though. My kids are lucky to get a bath twice a week. We wouldn’t want their skin to get dried out. 😉

So why on Earth why would I join 2 direct sales businesses when I barely have time as it is. This is why…

I never wanted to be a working mom. There I said it. I want to be the mom greeting her kids at the bus stop in yoga pants, not running through the terminal to catch the train so I can make the 6pm pick up time. I started my first business to make a little extra money to help towards bills because let’s face it, after daycare I don’t have much left over anyway. Another company came along and I decided to give it a shot. It was newer, but completely different from my first. Well I found I was making more money with the second biz so that took over really.

Fast forward 3 years and I am still working full time and still working my businesses. Well, maybe just the one business. I teeter on going inactive with the first, but I just don’t want to give it up. Something always pulls me back in. In those three years, my son has started school and received an ADHD/ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) diagnosis. So now I’m not just a mom, but a special needs mom. That just adds a crap load of challenges and responsibilities that we didn’t have before.  My kids, particularly my son, need me now more than ever so it is time I get myself together.

I love this quote. Even more so because it’s used in the new movie Moana. 🙂 I see the mistakes I’ve made in the past and I need to learn from them if I am going to move forward.

Hello Spring !

hello spring.png

Happy first day of spring! Here in southeast PA we are still dealing with the melting snow from the ONE snowstorm we had this year. Now that it is officially spring, I am hoping that the snow is behind us.

If you are in a sales or service business, you should be using this to your advantage. Spring is a universal subject and many people will be searching for ideas and inspiration for the season. #Spring has over 55 million posts on Instagram!

How can you incorporate this into your marketing? Make sure to tie your products into the season, such as:

  1. Cleaning Products – #springcleaning
  2. Fashion – #springdress, #springfashion
  3. Makeup – #springstyle
  4. Toys – #springbreak
  5.  Purses/Bags – #springstyle, #springfashion

Another option is to offer something of value to your community. Search for local first day of spring freebies. Rita’s Water Ice and Dairy Queen both have offers today!

How will you use #spring to help further your business? Come join my Facebook group to come learn or share ideas for your busy life/business.

A New Opportunity

How many times have you heard someone say, “They had it easy, they started at the beginning?”  While nothing is easy, it certainly does make it more likely you’ll be the first to introduce someone to a company if you are one of the first representatives. Just take a look at these numbers!

Origami Owl is introducing a skincare company to it’s family of brands. They purchased a small skincare company called Willa, run by another mother/daughter team and have created Willing Beauty. This new company will have something to help young people with their skin and something for more mature skin as well.  I have already started using some of the Willa products and have already received compliments on my skin.

What makes this company so great? It’s their commitment to using better-for-you ingredients. They are also cruelty free and made in the USA! How awesome is that!

Never Before seen offer from Origami Owl!

Join Origami Owl for ONLY $2!

fb-joino2for2_1-300x300

For the first time ever Origami Owl is dropping the kit requirement and allowing people to join for only $2. Imagine what that could do for you and your family this holiday! Whether you choose to sell to make a few extra dollars or you use the discount to save money while doing your holiday shopping, it’s a win-win.

This offer is only available from Thursday, October 13th through Tuesday, October 18th so don’t delay.

But Katie, I know nothing about sales!

That’s okay! I will be your first step in helping you get started with your business. There is also support from our corporate office (The Nest) and support and training from my mentors. You’re never alone.

I just don’t know if I have the time.

That’s the beauty of direct sales. It is flexible. You decide what time you have to devote and then we make a plan to fit your schedule. I will help you build some systems to make sure you use your time efficiently. I’ve also picked up a few time saving tips along the way.

I just don’t know if it’s for me.

I understand it can be a big decision. It took me 9 months before I decided to start my first business. My main concern was the cost of the kit, but Origami Owl has eliminated that obstacle. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Maybe it’s not for you and that’s okay. If you can think of someone who could benefit from this offer please pass this along.

If you would like to take advantage of this offer please visit my website and scroll to the bottom of the page to view sign on options.

Stay Happy!

How to Size Locket Photos

At Origami Owl we are known for our living lockets which, unlike traditional lockets, do not contain a photo. However, I am pleased to announce we have added two new lockets to our collection. Introducing our Wish Locket and Gratitude Locket.

As you can see, these are more traditional lockets that hold a picture. I am asked all the time how to size a picture properly. Usually, I wing it and use the photo template that comes with the locket. While it is helpful, what do you do if the photo you want to use is the wrong size?

I found a fabulous website called Locket Studio. You can upload a picture, select the size you need and you can download or email a JPEG of the proper size photo. Did I mention that this is FREE!

I will add that this is designed for another locket company so the size dimensions are based on those lockets. Our lockets hold a photo that is about 15mm wide so I recommend choosing the 17mm option then use the template provided with the locket for the perfect fit.  Be sure to leave a little room around the subject in the photo so you can trim away the excess.

I did find another site called Odd Prints, but that did not give an option for an oval photo. However, you could use it to shrink your photo then use the template provided to get the oval shape. Odd Prints gives you the option to download a free image as well. You can pay them to print one for you, but the shipping charge is a bit much for one photo. This website is a great option for those who have out Square Pavé Photo Locket Dangle.

This dangle holds a 0.5 x 0.5 inch photo. This website makes it really easy to alter the photo without losing clarity.

I am so excited to have found these resources for everyone. I’ll be sharing them every where. 🙂

If you found this helpful come join me on Facebook in my VIP group, The Twilight Lounge. It’s a fun place to hang out at night once the kids are in bed or you’re done working for the day.

Hello September!

I love the potential a new month brings. I ended August a lot better than I had planned so there’s that too. I had over $500 more in sales than I expected and 2, yes TWO, new designers. The one is someone I’ve been working with and the second was someone who had deactivated and wanted to come back to the company. My old mentor referred her to me! It just goes to show consistency pays off.

So now I’m setting my sights high this month! I have 2 new designers on my team and I am going to help them rock September. My success is only as great as those I help succeed!

If I work hard and help my team get off to a great start, I can reach Owlcheiver status and earn this display for free! How awesome would that be! I’ve been wanting a new necklace bar so this is perfect! Plus I can use any extras as incentives for my team or gifts for new team members.

We also launched a brand new essential oils line called Moodology to go with our new Sentiments collection. The Sentiments collection pieces are gorgeous! Bonus, we have a special bundle that can save you money, but it’s only available through Monday, September 5th. It comes with all FOUR 100% pure oil blends and everything you need to build your locket. You can check everything out here on my website.

Then there’s this little beauty for new designers. It was designed by our co-founder Bella! I just earned last month’s incentive so I am hoping to help someone start their journey with Origami Owl this month too. This is available for all new designers in US and Canada (while supplies last)! Curious about it, just ask. The holidays are coming and it’s the perfect opportunity to make some extra money. I love talking about Origami Owl and it’s really not as intimidating as it seems. 🙂

Feel free to ask me anything. I can be found at #TinkeringKate everywhere on the internet. You can also contact me via email at CharmingKate7@gmail.com.

Finding My Place

In a sea of direct sales representatives it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. When I joined Origami Owl it was relatively new and unheard of, heck many people still haven’t heard of it. Now we’ve hit a lot of growth. I’m still holding my own and even built a small team, but of course I would love to do better and reach more people. I love the idea of attraction marketing. I think too many people think if they just keep shoving their information at people they will succeed. I’m definitely not a pushy person so that method will not work for me.

I just had a great training call with a fabulous woman named Brenda Ster (Sassy Suite). I finally know who “my people” are and how I would like to help them.  I chose the name TinkeringKate because (1) it’s actually my name and (2) I found a definition for tinker: somebody able to do many different kinds of work successfully. As a busy mom that definition spoke to me. I’m Irish too so that helps.

So here I am, making strides to help busy moms (and non-mons) with life in general or their business. I know that once I get a few basic time management issues down (we’re all a work in progress) I’ll be a rock star!

Stay tuned for more adventures in direct sales!

Catch me most night at 9PM (EST) on Periscope for “Pillow Talk” where I recap my day and how it went.
