About Me | A to Z Challenge

Blogging has been something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. I don’t get a chance to get my thoughts out very often so I thought this would be a great way to say what I’m feeling for any one who cares. So I decided to do a blogging challenge. For the month of April I will blog about a topic from A to Z. I am a mom running a direct sales business so things will revolve around business and kids.

In true TinkeringKate form, here I am at 10:40pm trying to type up my first post for the month. Here we go…

I am a wife, mother of 2 children ages 5 and 2, IP paralegal AND I attempt to run not one, but TWO direct sales businesses. People wonder how I do it all. I’ll let you in on a little secret. I Don’t! There is always something that is NOT getting done. Most things are done last minute as evidenced by my last-stitch effort to post this before midnight. Week days are spent ushering the kids off to school in the morning and trying to guess how late I will be for work. I had everything timed perfectly. I even had my son’s bus stop moved so it was more convenient, then they changed the trolley schedule. So I have decided that I will NEVER get to work on time. My employers seem okay with this. I’ve been there almost 15 years. They know I’m good for it.

The evening is even more fun. It is a whirlwind of trolley troubles, what’s for dinner, who’s going to eat said dinner, homework, bath and bed. Let’s get real though. My kids are lucky to get a bath twice a week. We wouldn’t want their skin to get dried out. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So why on Earth why would I join 2 direct sales businesses when I barely have time as it is. This is why…

I never wanted to be a working mom. There I said it. I want to be the mom greeting her kids at the bus stop in yoga pants, not running through the terminal to catch the train so I can make the 6pm pick up time. I started my first business to make a little extra money to help towards bills because let’s face it, after daycare I don’t have much left over anyway. Another company came along and I decided to give it a shot. It was newer, but completely different from my first. Well I found I was making more money with the second biz so that took over really.

Fast forward 3 years and I am still working full time and still working my businesses. Well, maybe just the one business. I teeter on going inactive with the first, but I just don’t want to give it up. Something always pulls me back in. In those three years, my son has started school and received an ADHD/ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) diagnosis. So now I’m not just a mom, but a special needs mom. That just adds a crap load of challenges and responsibilities that we didn’t have before.ย  My kids, particularly my son, need me now more than ever so it is time I get myself together.

I love this quote. Even more so because it’s used in the new movie Moana. ๐Ÿ™‚ I see the mistakes I’ve made in the past and I need to learn from them if I am going to move forward.

Step 2 – Share your excitement

A little while back I started blogging about the five steps I feel are critical to getting your home business off to a great start. These are things I wish I did when I started. It would have saved me so much time. I want to help you avoid those mistakes. You can see my first post about getting organized here.

So you’ve started your home business, you figured out how you want to keep your calendar and where you’ll work. Now you need to fill up that calendar! So now what do you do? Spread the word!

I’m going to say that I think this is one of the hardest parts of starting a home based (direct sales, MLM, network marketing) business. Not because it’s hard to share your excitement, but to do it the right way. Chances are you know at least one, if not several, people who also sell something. Some people have been so “excited” to share their love for their company that they have spammed everyone they know to either buy, book or join. That may work for some people, but chances are you are going to alienate your friends. I’ve seen it happen. People stop talking to you because they don’t want to be just another prospect. I know what you’re thinking, but Katie, if I can’t tell everyone about my new business how are they going to know to buy from me?

Let’s get a little old school. Let’s remember a time when we didn’t use social media to stay connected with everyone. Remember the part of your phone with numbers on it? You use that to call people. That’s what you’re going to use. Most companies have some sort of worksheet you can use to help generate a list of people you know to call and invite to your new business. At Origami Owl, we call it our A.L.I.C.E. list. It stands for:

  • Acquaintances
  • Livelihood
  • Inner Circle
  • Children’s Contacts
  • E-connections

I’ve also heard of the F.R.A.N.K. list:

  • Friends
  • Relatives
  • Acquaintances
  • Neighbors
  • Kid Contacts

Same principle, just worded differently.

Now, I’m not saying you can’t use social media to help spread the word. You just want to be sure that’s not all you’re posting. Your friends liked you before you started working for X company and they still want to know about you. Many people recommend the 80-20 rule. Your posts should only be 20% promotional. The other 80% should still be those memes that crack you up, cute cats and pictures of your kids. Heck maybe what you had for dinner last night if you’re a good cook or went to a nice restaurant.

There’s more to you than your business, don’t let that get lost in the process. Chances are you’re not the only rep in town so be someone people want to do business with. If not, they’ll go elsewhere.

What’s the deal?

So what’s the deal with those lockets?

image

Our Living Lockets come in all shapes and sizes, but do you know the meaning behind them? What makes them so special?

Or motto is “You tell stories with words,ย  we tell stories with jewelry.” People love to create things that are personal to them. Just look at the popularity of Pandora bracelets.

I’ll admit, I never fully appreciated the potential until something bad happened. I had another business I was working and I had no need for a locket. I had enough jewelry that I never wore. Then the unthinkable happened, my mother passed away rather suddenly. I decided to create a locket in her memory.

image

This contains some of her favorite things like reading, shopping and crafts.ย  I also included her birthstone and a footprint. Her favorite psalm was footprints in the sand so I thought it was very appropriate.ย  I added s few things later on like an angel and the ladybug.ย  ๐Ÿž

Once I saw the possibilities, the fun really began. I purchased charms that represented my family and my favorite holidays. Some people like to set it an forget it, but I like to switch things up.

Part of me wishes I joined in December of 2013, but I’m just so happy I took a leap of faith and bought the starter kit. It was so reasonable I knew I would be able to make back my initial investment.

I hope you’ll stay tuned to see even more creations.

Summer Fun!

What do you look forward to about the summer? For me, it’s longer days and warmer weather. As a child we spent many summers down the “shore,” that’s the beach for those of you not from the New Jersey/Philly area. ๐Ÿ™‚ย  We try to continue the tradition by taking our children to the beach as well. I was so excited with our summer collection last year and this sand castle charm. We spent many days building sand castle on the beach.

Life a Beach.jpg

Now, I know not everyone loves the beach. It can be cold, windy, full of horse flies that treat you like lunch and let’s not talk about the sand that gets everywhere! Maybe you’re a mountains family and you love the lake life.

What are your favorite activities?

  • Picnics
  • Carnival or Pier Rides
  • Special treats like cotton candy or funnel cake
  • Ice Cream Cones
  • Spending time at the pool
  • Running through sprinklers

I bet there is an Origami Owl locket out there just for you! Check in next week for our summer collection reveal.

You can join my Facebook Page to see what’s new or check out my website for yourself next Wednesday afternoon.

Happy Summer!

5 Reasons Why Spring is a Great Time to Start

I am a big supporter of direct sales. I think it’s a great way for people to earn extra income on their own time. Now I can findย  a reason why anytime is a good time to start, but here are 5 reasons why the spring time is a great time to start your journey.

1. Winter is Over!

People have been cooped up all winter. They would love an opportunity to get out an socialize with their friends and family.

2. New Products

Many companies do a big revamp for the spring (fall is the other time period). That means even if you or people you know are already a fan of your business there will be something new for you to show them.

For example, here is a preview of some of my company’s new release: Origami Owl Sneak Peak Day 1

3. Christmas is in the Past

Many people are still recovering from their Christmas spending in January and February. By the spring people feel more comfortable spending money again.

4. Gift Giving Opportunities

The spring is full of gift giving opportunities. Be the one to help people with their gift giving needs. Examples are baby showers (from those winter babies ;-)), bridal showers, Mother’s Day, graduations, new homeowners.

5. Spring Craft Fairs

Worried about making connects and growing your business? The spring is full of local craft fairs. For as little as $25 you can set up a table and meet new people to expand your business. I’ve had several bookings and new designers from craft fairs.

Whatever you decide, be sure to start your new business with excitement and enthusiasm and it will spread to those around you.

Who Loves Surprises??

I don’t often specifically promote my business here, but this was something I just had to share. Origami Owl just announced an awesome incentive for new designers! The first 250 designers who sign up for the new launch kit on February 18th will receive a little extra something to show off to their friends and family.

In addition, select designers will receive a golden “ticket.” Some of the new kits will contain a golden owl. The lucky designers who find this owl will receive a $500 product bonus. How awesome is that?!

There are so many ways to work your business. I truly believe this could work for anyone. I’m due to have knee surgery in a few weeks so I’m actually trying to move my business to more on-line parties so I don’t have to stop working just because I can’t get out to do parties. I hope to continue that trend so that I can do most of my business on-line and spend more time with my family.

Some people build their business by organizing fundraisers. Now that might not sound very lucrative, but it works for some people.

This is your business and you can work as little or as much as you want/need. Now, don’t get me wrong, you do need to work. This is a business after all. You can’t just sign up and wait for the money to come rolling in and if someone tells you different run! don’t walk away from them.

If you’re looking for a way to make some extra money I would love to talk and just give you some information and an honest review of what it’s like. Our company is really stepping up their new designer training so even if you’ve never done sales before you’ll have the tools to help you get started. We have a great supportive upline. Let me tell you, having a great upline is absolutely necessary for your success!

I should add that we just launched in Canada last year so there is still room for opportunity up there as well!

Hello

Hello world! Well I finally went and bought my own domain. It feels like being a mom for the first time. Part pride and part what the heck do I do with this thing. ๐Ÿ™‚

Bear with me while I get the hang of this thing and get it up and running. Eventually I would like this to be a source for women (and men) to help them find time for themselves. More on that later…
