How to Keep your Business Rockin’ in the Winter

winter-how-to

Whether you like to hibernate in the winter with the bears or you need a backup for when Old Man Winter strikes, Facebook parties are the way to go!  Facebook parties were all the rage a few years ago and people found great success with them. However, now days Facebook parties are a dime a dozen. Chances are you get invite to at least one a week.

In the spirit of full disclosure, this post contains affiliate links, which means that I may get a commissions if you decide to purchase anything from the link below. I only recommend products & services that I use and love myself, so I know you’ll be in good hands.

In order to stand out from the crowd you’re going to have to be a little different.  If you need help updating your party, I highly recommend taking Sassy Suite’s Epic Facebook party course. You can check out the details here. This is a self-paced course which includes a workbook and videos. It takes you from the planning stage all the though to the post party.

It helped me see that creating a Facebook party along the lines of a real party was more fun for our guests. It kept people more engaged and interested in the party. It all starts off with an epic party playlist. Because what’s a party without a little music.  🙂

My first Epic Facebook party using this course had more engagement and sales. Now obviously, there is no guarantee, but many people have found success with this program.

Keep in mind, Facebook parties aren’t just for the winter time. You can use this format all through the year. Here are just a couple of situations where you might need a Facebook party:

  1. Long distance host or guests – No longer is distance an issue, everyone can come together for a good time on their phone or computer.
  2. Summer vacations – Holding in-home parties in the summer can be challenging due to everyone’s vacation schedules. This makes it possible for people to join no matter where they are.
  3. The busy host – Seems like most people now days are so busy they barely have time for themselves. This gives them a chance to socialize with their friends without interrupting their schedule.

The best part about this party format is that you can adapt it to any theme so no 2 parties are alike. Here are some parties I’ve done in the past:

  1. Beach Bash
  2. Fall Festival
  3. Spooktacular Halloween
  4. Modern Day Fairytale

To keep your party running smoothly, I highly recommend using Cinchshare to schedule your posts so you can focus on responding to questions and comments come party time. It was a lifesaver when my 2 year old decided she wanted to stay up late one night. 😉 See the sidebar for a link to their website.

I hope this helps you keep your business going all year long. There is nothing harder then having to restart your business time after time.

Stay Happy!

Believe in 2017

believe-cover

Let’s face it 2016 kinda sucked for a lot of people. One of the oldest New Year’s traditions is to make resolutions. Resolutions are a firm decision to do or not to do something. It’s so definite. Many people see it as an all or nothing approach so if they slip on their resolution they give it up completely.

You may have noticed a shift away from this trend. Many people, especially business owners, choose a word to help guide them and motivate them throughout the year. There’s no strict adherence to some behavior. Just a thought to help you be your best self through the year.

In the beginning of 2016 I vowed to make it the year of me. Now that might sound a little narcissistic, but after two kids and working full-time I really lost myself. I vowed to start taking better care of myself and making time for things that I enjoyed doing, including my home business.

Well….that didn’t go as planned. It started off great with a trip to Las Vegas for a leadership conference. Then I had a procedure on my knee which lead to full-blown knee surgery in March. Before I even finished my PT from the knee surgery I hurt my back in May. Laying in bed in pain was not how I planned Memorial Day weekend. Then, just for fun, I broke my toe in June. My brother was diagnosed with brain cancer and then my daughter developed a weird inflammation of her blood vessels right before my trip to convention. Lastly, my son’s ADHD and Autism diagnosis. I tried to keep up with things the best I could, but my business just didn’t get the attention it needed.

It wasn’t all bad. I was still able to keep up some pretty good sales and welcomed 6 new team members.  Overall though, I just felt like everything I did didn’t work out right. I had many events and parties that flopped. That lead to a lot of disagreements with my husband who thought it would be better that I be home instead of “wasting” my time. He doesn’t get the whole planting seeds analogy, lol.

All of this left me with such self-doubt. I still haven’t completely got it out of my head. So for 2017 I chose the word Believe to remind myself to believe in myself as a mother, wife and business owner.

I think it’s fitting that we had 2 “Believe” products this holiday. Maybe it was a sign pointing me in the right direction. 🙂

Halloween Safety Tips 2016

halloween-safety-1

Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

ALL DRESSED UP:

  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
  • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
  • Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. Makeup should be tested ahead of time on a small patch of skin to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises on the big day.
  • When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
  • If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
  • Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
  • Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost.

 CARVING A NICHE:

  • Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting.
  • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.
  • Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and not on a porch or any path where visitors may pass close by. They should never be left unattended.

 HOME SAFE HOME:

  • To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.
  • Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.
  • Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps.
  • Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

 halloween-safety-4
ON THE TRICK-OR-TREAT TRAIL:

  • A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
  • Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.
  • If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home.
  • Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.
  • Because pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween, remind Trick-or-Treaters:
    • Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going.
    • Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
    • Carry a cellphone for quick communication.
    • Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
    • If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic.
    • Never cut across yards or use alleys.
    • Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never cross between parked cars or out driveways.
    • Don’t assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn’t mean others will!
    • Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN:

  • A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.
  • Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils.
  • Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
  • Try to ration treats for the days and weeks following Halloween.

What’s Old is New Again

I took a trip to Forever 21 the other day because a friend recommended their plus size department. I’ve been plus size even before I was 21, haha. As I’m browsing the racks looking for the tell-tale “Plus Size” here sign I notice a lot of plaid shirts. I figure it’s just a trend for the fall/winter selling season. Then I’m looking around and I see cropped shirts, short skirts, flowing floral shirts and it hit me! 90’s Fashions are back in style!

We all know fashion trends tend to recycle through the decades. I really should just save everything because it will be in style again someday. I remember reading somewhere that chokers were back in style too so that just confirms the 90’s fashion trends are back. I thought I would do my own version of a choker using our Origami Owl wrap brackets. I had a little fun once the kids went to bed.

I was surprised how comfortable it was to wear! Now as you can see I’m not a petite person and the wraps worked great. We have two different size wraps and I do need the larger one to wear this as a choker comfortably, but someone with a smaller neck could definitely use our smaller wraps. The top 2 photos are the wrap bracelets with a Living Locket attached. Our Living Lockets hold different charms to represent your  story. We have a wide variety to choose from: sentimental or just for fun. For the bottom left photo I used one of our expression frames. Mine says “Let it Go.” You can view our full collection of wraps here on my website.

If you would like help building your own Living Locket necklace or bracelet feel free to contact me via email.

If you love jewelry and being the first to see what’s new, drop on by my VIP community, The Twilight Lounge.

Now excuse me while I go listen to some Nirvana…

fb-joino2for2_1-300x300

For the first time ever Origami Owl is dropping the kit requirement and allowing people to join for only $2. Imagine what that could do for you and your family this holiday! Whether you choose to sell to make a few extra dollars or you use the discount to save money while doing your holiday shopping, it’s a win-win.

This offer is only available from Thursday, October 13th through Tuesday, October 18th so don’t delay.

But Katie, I know nothing about sales!

That’s okay! I will be your first step in helping you get started with your business. There is also support from our corporate office (The Nest) and support and training from my mentors. You’re never alone.

I just don’t know if I have the time.

That’s the beauty of direct sales. It is flexible. You decide what time you have to devote and then we make a plan to fit your schedule. I will help you build some systems to make sure you use your time efficiently. I’ve also picked up a few time saving tips along the way.

I just don’t know if it’s for me.

I understand it can be a big decision. It took me 9 months before I decided to start my first business. My main concern was the cost of the kit, but Origami Owl has eliminated that obstacle. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Maybe it’s not for you and that’s okay. If you can think of someone who could benefit from this offer please pass this along.

How to Size Locket Photos

At Origami Owl we are known for our living lockets which, unlike traditional lockets, do not contain a photo. However, I am pleased to announce we have added two new lockets to our collection. Introducing our Wish Locket and Gratitude Locket.

As you can see, these are more traditional lockets that hold a picture. I am asked all the time how to size a picture properly. Usually, I wing it and use the photo template that comes with the locket. While it is helpful, what do you do if the photo you want to use is the wrong size?

I found a fabulous website called Locket Studio. You can upload a picture, select the size you need and you can download or email a JPEG of the proper size photo. Did I mention that this is FREE!

I will add that this is designed for another locket company so the size dimensions are based on those lockets. Our lockets hold a photo that is about 15mm wide so I recommend choosing the 17mm option then use the template provided with the locket for the perfect fit.  Be sure to leave a little room around the subject in the photo so you can trim away the excess.

I did find another site called Odd Prints, but that did not give an option for an oval photo. However, you could use it to shrink your photo then use the template provided to get the oval shape. Odd Prints gives you the option to download a free image as well. You can pay them to print one for you, but the shipping charge is a bit much for one photo. This website is a great option for those who have out Square Pavé Photo Locket Dangle.

dg4040_square_pave_photo_locket_dangle_holiday-v2

This dangle holds a 0.5 x 0.5 inch photo. This website makes it really easy to alter the photo without losing clarity.

I am so excited to have found these resources for everyone. I’ll be sharing them every where. 🙂

If you found this helpful come join me on Facebook in my VIP group, The Twilight Lounge. It’s a fun place to hang out at night once the kids are in bed or you’re done working for the day.
