No “Happy” Memorial Day

I never served in the Military, but I know enough to never wish someone a “happy” memorial day. Many people take this holiday to kick off their summer with BBQs and beach parties, but the meaning behind this holiday is not a celebratory occasion.  It is a reminder to take time to remember all those who lost their life fighting for this country. This is one of my favorite quotes:

In honor of Memorial Day I am hosting a fundraiser to benefit veterans. I came across  an all-volunteer organization called Dog T.A.G.S. This is an excerpt from their website:

Dog T.A.G.S. (Train Assist Guide Serve), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is a service dog owner training program for veterans suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and/or MST (Military Sexual Trauma). The veteran trains his/her personal dog with the help of experienced dog trainers. We have veterans who have served in conflicts ranging from Vietnam to present day Iraq and Afghanistan.

You can learn more at their website, http://www.dogtagsprogram.org/.

As you may know, I am a designer with a company called Origami Owl. Part of our mission statement is to be a Force For Good so I wanted to do something to give back. So for every Dog Tag or Inscriptions dangle sold I will donate $10 to this organization. Here is what they look like.

Our new tags and dangles can be inscribed with your favorite MLB team logo or you can inscribe a custom message. These are great for father’s day gifts or graduation gifts. The tags can also be worn on a key chain. I actually did that for my dad for Christmas. 🙂 For any other items purchased, 10% will go to Dog T.A.G.S.

Simply visit my Origami Owl website to place your order. All orders placed on my site this weekend will count towards the fundraiser. As a thank you, I am also offering some prizes to those who participate.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

What’s the deal?

So what’s the deal with those lockets?

Our Living Lockets come in all shapes and sizes, but do you know the meaning behind them? What makes them so special?

Or motto is “You tell stories with words,  we tell stories with jewelry.” People love to create things that are personal to them. Just look at the popularity of Pandora bracelets.

I’ll admit, I never fully appreciated the potential until something bad happened. I had another business I was working and I had no need for a locket. I had enough jewelry that I never wore. Then the unthinkable happened, my mother passed away rather suddenly. I decided to create a locket in her memory.

This contains some of her favorite things like reading, shopping and crafts.  I also included her birthstone and a footprint. Her favorite psalm was footprints in the sand so I thought it was very appropriate.  I added s few things later on like an angel and the ladybug.  🐞

Once I saw the possibilities, the fun really began. I purchased charms that represented my family and my favorite holidays. Some people like to set it an forget it, but I like to switch things up.

Part of me wishes I joined in December of 2013, but I’m just so happy I took a leap of faith and bought the starter kit. It was so reasonable I knew I would be able to make back my initial investment.

I hope you’ll stay tuned to see even more creations.

The Top 5 People Who Join Direct Sales

I’m here to break the stereotypes of direct sales. I think that the most perpetuated stereotype is that those who join direct sales are mostly stay-at-home-moms. This is definitely not true. I’ve come up with the 5 groups of people who join the direct sales industry. Of course, everyone comes from all walks of life and does things for different reasons.

So here we go…

  1. Stay at Home Mom: Let’s face it, daycare is expensive. A lot of the time, it just makes more financial sense for mom (or dad) to stay home. If we have one more child, it would be cheaper for me to stay home too. They may still want to contribute to the family budget or have some extra spending money.
  2. Working Mom: Again, daycare is expensive and eats up a lot of your paycheck (I should know). So maybe you need just a little extra to help cushion your wallet. Maybe your kids are older and participate in activities. Those activity fees and equipment needs can really add up.
  3. College age individuals: College is expensive, too. I remember some textbooks cost about $100 a piece! Let’s face it, unless you’re independently wealthy, you could use some extra money just about anytime. **With Origami Owl, kids as young as 12 can join under adult supervision as an Owlette. How awesome it that?
  4. Retirees: Maybe you’re reaching the end of your career path. You might want something to just keep you busy or maybe you do need a little extra money to help you live comfortably in retirement. My director was able to retire her husband. Now that is love!
  5. Just because: Now this category has nothing to do with money. Remember I said people have all different reasons and some may fall into this category. There are those who love the product and want to get it at a discount. There are those who just want something for themselves. Something that takes them out of the role of wife, mom or employee. Maybe you just want to get out and make some friends. I get paid to party, literally! 🙂

Okay, I thought of an additional one.

BONUS: Seasonal workers: It’s mid May and school will be letting out soon. Teachers are often unemployed for several months. Many do their best to prepare, but sometimes things happen that can’t be anticipated. *If you fall into this category, be sure to check your company’s requirements regarding sales quotas and activity requirements.

I hope you continue to join me on my journey. You can follow me on other platforms too!

First Step to Success – Get Organized

If you’ve read any of my other blog posts, you know I work full time while trying to take care of 2 little ones. I also have a home based business called Origami Owl. So yeah, I’m a little busy. ☺

Whenever I go to meetings or conferences I see people who are so successful and sometimes it gets me down because I’m not as successful as them. I know they say, “Don’t compare yourself to another person’s success.” You can only expect back what you put into it. So yeah, there are others out there who have more time to run their business. The problem is I WANT to be successful like them.

So how do I do that when I have so little time to work my business?  My uplines are awesome and always willing to offer advice or suggestions to help. I feel like part of my problem is I have so many ideas in my head, but not enough time to implement them.

The first thing I need to do is GET ORGANIZED!  There is no room for a real office space in our house so that’s problem number one,  but there’s nothing I can do about that until we move.

Here’s what I’m working with. When my daughter came along we had to sacrifice office space for her huge crib. I do most work when they are asleep so that doesn’t work. I put a cabinet in the living room to house some stuff too.

When I started I didn’t have systems in place to stay organized. (I’ll post more about that later) The paperwork piled up and it took me forever to find stuff. I’m still working on finalizing my tax info from last year (yes I know it’s May!).

This is my newest planner. I’ve gone through several trying to find the right fit. This is a Happy Planner and so far I like it. It’s not huge, but gives me plenty of room to write. Those stickers are to help me stay consistent on social media.

This is the first step to getting everything together. I know a lot of people like digital apps or websites, but I still like having something physical to write stuff down. I do use some apps so I have everything on the go too. This is more so when I’m planning things out.

Be sure to follow me to see how I do. I’ll be posting an update in a few weeks and YES it’s on my calendar!

Let’s stay in touch!

The wait is over!

It amazes me how much I love every new collection with Origami Owl. Especially since I was never big into jewelry. When I was younger I just wore my claddagh and once I was married, just my wedding ring. However, Origami Owl is more than just jewelry. Our pieces are designed to bring back wonderful memories that you can keep close to your heart.

Here is the video for the summer reveal: Origami Owl Summer 2016 Collection Reveal

Immediately, I am drawn to the passport and cruise ship charms. My husband and I love to travel. We have slowed down a bit since having children, but we were able to take our son to Italy for our 5 year anniversary so even he has a little passport too.

I was a girl scout and I worked at one of our summer camps for a few years so the camping charms also have a place in heart.

This was before the digital error so most of those pictures are in a box somewhere, lol.

Well, time for me to order. I can’t wait until they arrive. Now, expedited shipping or standard. Decisions, decisions…

You can check everything out here tomorrow afternoon.

Summer Fun!

What do you look forward to about the summer? For me, it’s longer days and warmer weather. As a child we spent many summers down the “shore,” that’s the beach for those of you not from the New Jersey/Philly area. 🙂  We try to continue the tradition by taking our children to the beach as well. I was so excited with our summer collection last year and this sand castle charm. We spent many days building sand castle on the beach.

Life a Beach.jpg

Now, I know not everyone loves the beach. It can be cold, windy, full of horse flies that treat you like lunch and let’s not talk about the sand that gets everywhere! Maybe you’re a mountains family and you love the lake life.

What are your favorite activities?

  • Picnics
  • Carnival or Pier Rides
  • Special treats like cotton candy or funnel cake
  • Ice Cream Cones
  • Spending time at the pool
  • Running through sprinklers

I bet there is an Origami Owl locket out there just for you! Check in next week for our summer collection reveal.

You can join my Facebook Page to see what’s new or check out my website for yourself next Wednesday afternoon.

Happy Summer!

Pinterest, how do I love thee…

Being a mom is hard these days. Being a mom who works outside the home while trying to build a home based business is even harder. Then you actually need to FEED your children too. Geez the work never ends! When you have to deal with food allergies and sensitivities it gets even harder. I’m used to gluten-free cooking. My husband has a sensitivity to gluten so we’ve avoided it for years.  However, we now have to avoid: soy, potato, corn, cauliflower and dairy. Just about everything found in gluten-free conveniences. So now pretty much everything needs to be made from scratch which is a blessing in disguise because now we can avoid hidden food additives too.

Enter Pinterest….

This has been such a lifesaver!! I can’t imagine what my life would be like without Pinterest.

Some of my favorite recipes are:

  • 100 Calorie (score!) Strawberry Oatmeal Bars
  • Banana Oatmeal Pancakes
  • Broccoli Quinoa Mac & Cheese
  • Slow Cooker Taco Filling
  • Quinoa and Brown Rice Tortillas

I was able to use it to help build my business as well.

I never attended an in-home jewelry bar before I joined Origami Owl. Search “jewelry bar display” and voila! I have a bunch of ideas.

And here’s what I came up with when I first started…

jewelry bar display

It’s so much bigger now that I’ve built up my stock. 🙂

I don’t like people feeling like they are being invited to just come buy some jewelry. Now we need “party themes” so people can actually feel like they are coming together to have fun with their friends. I have found ideas for Halloween themed parties, hot cocoa bar theme and many others.

You can find information for just about any aspect of your business: branding, blogging, how to increase presence and so on. Give it a try and let me know what interesting stuff you find.
